The South African Riding for the Disabled Association (Sarda) held a high tea on 7 March in to raise funds so that they can continue giving their unique form of equine therapy to people living with disabilities.

At Sarda on Peter Road in Ruimsig, the mentally and physically handicapped are treated to horse and donkey rides on the beautiful five-acre plot. Riders and helpers enjoy the open-air setting and commune with nature as part of the therapeutic experience.

“The process involves teaching these children and adults how to actively respond to their horses,” said Sarda Gauteng spokesperson, Petra Lewis. “It helps to improve balance and co-ordination, which in turn promotes independence and decision making.

“These fundraisers are fundamental to us because maintaining a plot this size is an expensive endeavour. Added to the price of the animals’ upkeep, as well as buying new horses and equipment, we sometimes find ourselves overwhelmed with costs.”

One of the main sponsors of the high tea fundraiser, was Honeydew-based Renico Construction. The company has helped Sarda in numerous ways and are challenging other corporations to match their generous donations toward Sarda’s cause.

“We’re very proud to have been working with Sarda as part of our corporate social investment programme since last year,” said Alida Grundlingh from Renico’s human resources department.

“For me personally, seeing how these people, especially the children, transform into happy, capable individuals when spending time with the horses is what makes it worth while.”
